Facebook Messenger is celebrating a decade of chat threads, video calls, GIFs, and audio notes with an “epic” birthday bundle of 10 fresh functions.
“Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen tremendous growth and transformation, but our purpose has stayed the same: to help people stay closely connected to those who matter,” Loredana Crisan, Facebook’s VP of messaging products, wrote in a blog announcement.
Most Likely To…
Whether deciding where to go for dinner or which movie to watch, Messenger attempts to make the group decisions easier using polls. In a festive twist on the feature, users can now play “Most likely to” in polls, “to help you discover what your friends really think” about things like who’s most likely to give gifts on their own birthday, fight zombies while everyone else runs away, or miss their flight.
To play a poll game in your group chat, tap Polls and select the Most Likely To tab; choose one of Facebook’s questions or write your own prompt, then select the names of chat participants to be added as potential answers.
For a fussy family member or the friend who insists they don’t want presents this year, Messenger is introducing cash gifts. When US users send birthday money through Facebook Pay, recipients are notified via the app with a message and virtual balloons, and the cash is instantly deposited into their bank account.
To help you get into the celebratory mood, Messenger is introducing a new birthday chat theme and curated “Messenger is 10!” sticker pack, featuring the firm’s 10 favorite stickers from various artists, including a green alien, hugging bananas, and smiling heart.
“Fill the sky with purple and blue balloons with our Birthday Balloon 360 background and blow out birthday candles with our Birthday AR effect,” Crisan suggested. Or surprise someone with a birthday song Soundmoji and confetti Message Effect by tapping the smiley face then the loudspeaker icon or “Effects” tab, respectively.

Spice up your text with Word Effects, a forthcoming way to pair words with emoji. Rolling out to Messenger “in the near future,” the function lets you choose symbols to match words or phrases. Pair “Happy birthday,” for instance, with the party popper to trigger a “delightful cascade” of celebratory emojis.
“You now have the perfect way to highlight inside jokes, relive your memories, and add extra delight to your favorite phrases,” the blog said.
