Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Friday directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe the killing of Cebu-based lawyer Rex Fernandez and file charges against those behind it.
Guevarra issued the order to NBI officer-in-charge Eric Distor, who was also directed to give regular updates regarding the investigation.
Fernandez was shot dead inside his vehicle in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City on Thursday by an unidentified attacker. His driver also suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital.
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has launched a separate investigation into Fernandez’s death, while the Supreme Court (SC) human rights committee, which is looking into the attacks on members of the legal profession, asked the police and other organizations to submit their findings by the end of September.
“The killing of any lawyer is of serious concern to all of us. Violence solves nothing. It is anathema to the rule of law,” panel chairperson and SC Associate Justice Marvic Leonen said in a statement. — Virgil Lopez/RSJ, GMA News
