FILIPINO pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena placed fifth at the Athletissima in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday morning (Philippine time), as he competed for the first time since finishing 11th at the Tokyo Olympics.

Obiena, who owns the national record at 5.87 meters, easily cleared the 5.42- and 5.52-meter bars but was unable to hurdle 5.62-meter height in three attempts.

The 25-year-old Obiena shared fifth place with French Ethan Cormont and American KC Lightfoot.

American Christopher Nielsen ruled the tournament after clearing 5.82 meters as his compatriot Sam Kendricks finished second. Kendricks also cleared 5.82 but placed second since he made it after two attempts unlike Nielsen who cleared the bar in just one attempt.

Russian Timur Morgunov claimed the third spot after hurdling 5.72 meters, while reigning Olympic champion and world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden settled for the fourth place after clearing 5.62 meters.
