Savor this year’s Singapore Food Festival ‘to go,’ at home

The annual Singapore Food Festival (SFF) returns to Manila on its 28th year, bringing the best of the Lion City’s food and beverage talents to the fore from today, August 27, to September 12.

Adopting the theme “Savour Singapore in Every Bite,” SFF is where foodies can reimagine dining and travel to the cosmopolitan city as Singapore Tourism Board (STB) presents a hybrid of over 50 physical and online gastronomic activities – double in scale even, than last year’s celebration.

Undaunted by the ongoing health crisis, SFF 2021 remains eager to spotlight the country’s food heritage and inventive culinary spirit. As such, Filipinos and audiences worldwide can enjoy Singapore’s well-loved flavors through virtual food tours, docu-features and partner recipe videos.

Chef JP Anglo and Bjorn Shen will have their own take on cooking Singapore's Oyster Omelette in a special virtual masterclass.

Chef JP Anglo and Bjorn Shen will have their own take on cooking Singapore’s Oyster Omelette in a special virtual masterclass.

“Singapore Food Festival through the years has stayed true to what it is about – all things Singapore food by following the journey from the basics, to modern takes of younger chefs, but of course, not forgetting the heritage as well. During Covid times, what we really try to do is to incorporate new technology to continue to stay in touch with everyone and to continue to celebrate the Singapore food that we all love,” said Ruby Liu, Singapore Tourism Board Area Director for the Philippines, in a virtual launch.

“So we invite Filipino foodies to indulge in Singaporean cuisine from the comfort and safety of their own homes and find out more about Singapore’s culture through food,” she added.

The Boyster Omelette

Filipino foodies can essentially experience the SFF through the live masterclass of chef JP Anglo of Sarsa Kitchen and chef Bjorn Shen of Artichoke. The two will feature their own renditions of the Oyster Omelette, a Singaporean favorite that has been a staple in hawker stalls around the city-state.

In the Boyster Omelette Four-Hands Masterclass, which will happen on August 29 at 6 p.m., the two chefs will demonstrate various spinoffs of the classic local dish on the VisitSingaporePH Facebook page.

“This is going to be the first time we’re going to cook virtually. Normally we will cook together and just have fun and get inspiration from one another. But our intentions will always be clear – it’s to have fun while we cook food,” Anglo, who happens to be good friends with Shen since their culinary school days, shared in the same virtual interview.

Shen, on the other hand, enthused, “The whole premise here is that the fact that JP and I both love Boyster Omelette. So we’re going to cook this together but with our own unique style.”

More ways to reimagine travel, dining

Filipinos can also savor the flavors of Singapore through Singapore Tourism Board’s partnership with the online food delivery app, Pick.A.Roo. They can order from any of its 11 partner merchants – Putien, Hawker Chan, Babu, Marriott Cafe, Shang at Home, James & Daughter, Banana Leaf, Your Local, Char Express, Nanyang, and Wee Nam Kee – and get a discount voucher worth P150 (for a minimum purchase of P1,000) using the code PICKSFF.

Meanwhile, fans of Singaporean flavors can also join other free virtual activities by visiting singaporefoodfestival.sg.

Curious foodies can take a deep dive into the plant-growing business of Kok Fah Farm. Through a docu-feature, SFF will take viewers on a virtual tour of the family-owned soil and hydroponics farm, where they can learn technologies behind high-quality local produce. They can also watch “Kitchen Insider: Sustenir,” which explains modern farming and incorporating one’s own produce into everyday dishes.

Additionally, spectators of the Singapore Food Festival can reimagine walking through Singapore’s popular neighborhoods as renowned food host Nikki Muller takes them on a virtual tour of Little India and Tiong Bahru.
